Retired Bishop of Kilmore dies in hospital | Print |  Email

The retired Bishop of Kilmore, Dr Francis MacKiernan, died on December 23 in Cavan General Hospital at the age of 79. A native of Aughawillan, Co. Leitrim, he served as Bishop of Kilmore from 1972 until his retirement in 1998 when he was the longest serving member of the Irish Hierarchy. Dr MacKiernan's funeral took place on Wednesday in the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Felim in Cavan town. After concelebrated Mass he was buried in the cathedral crypt.
