Professor Barry O'Donnell, professor emeritus of paediatric surgery at UCD, was presented with the Urology Medal of the American Academy of Paediatrics at its annual meeting in New Orleans last weekend. The honour was described by the Irish Times as the "most prestigious award in the field of paediatric surgery". Prof. O'Donnell, who is also the former consultant paediatric surgeon at the Children's Research Centre at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, was recognised for his role in developing a ten- to 15-minute procedure to correct a condition called vesico-ureteric reflux; previously it required surgery and a six-day stay in hospital.
