Interleado.com
launches product to improve website rankings
Interleado.com, an online marketing software solutions
company based in NovaUCD, has released a new product, the ‘All in One SEO
Workbench’, which allows users to generate customised reports for their target
websites. These reports then allow users to easily see, in a dashboard format,
how well each website is optimised and what its visibility level is. Also
displayed are the top three issues that are preventing each website from
attracting more traffic, along with a comprehensive list of the critical
factors influencing the website’s visibility.
The product, which is delivered using the SaaS (software-as-a-service)
business model is targeted at web design, internet marketing, PR and
advertising agencies but can also be used by individual businesses.
Interleado.com, was founded in 2007 by Peter Cullen. www.Interleado.com 3
Ireland in €30m broadband deal with Nokia
Mobile and broadband operator 3 Ireland signed a
three-year €30m contract with Nokia Siemens Networks which will enable 3 to
upgrade its network to offer Irish consumers and businesses high speed broadband
access operating on 7.2Mbps technology this year, with the deployment of
14.4Mbps technology in 2009. In addition to the downlink technology, 3 is also
deploying uplink technology of 2Mbps.
3 is deploying the technology through the provision of
Nokia Siemens Networks flat network architecture solution known as ‘Internet
High-Speed Packet Access’ (I-HSPA), a technology optimised to carry huge
volumes of data traffic, with its all-Internet Protocol (IP) backhaul. 3 plans
to switch on 7.2 Mbps per second technology in the Munster region in the coming
weeks. http://www.3ireland.ie
PA
Consulting partners Iontas for business process optimisation
Management consulting firm PA Consulting Group has
joined forces with Iontas to deliver consulting services and software,
respectively, through a comprehensive, cooperative engagement. Combining PA's
expertise in operations architecture with Iontas's Focus software suite,
organisations will be able to gauge the efficiency of their people and
processes, and make the appropriate changes.
Iontas chief executive Joe Stockton said, “Clients who
use Iontas software will have a distinct advantage when utilising PA's
services. Given PA's specialisation in analysing and optimising business
processes, it can analyse the data produced by the Iontas Focus Software and
provide guidance on implementing best practices based on those results”. eWorking
website urges firms to cut costs through homeworking
Specialist broadband provider Centrecom has launched a
website, eWorkingIreland.com, to provide Irish companies and employees with
information about saving money through eWorking or teleworking. Research
featured on the new website indicates that 40% fewer Irish people work from
home than the EU average while 69% of Irish workers would be more likely to
join a company that offered eWork.
“eWorkingIreland.com has been launched to provide
comprehensive information to employers and staff interested in eWorking in
Ireland. The website refers to numerous studies and reports that testify to the
cost-saving advantages of having employees work part-time from home”, according
to Christopher Plockelman, manager director of Centrecom.
Founded in 2005, Centrecom has experienced rapid growth
by providing services from corporate homeworker broadband to telecoms brokering
and project management services. Centrecom is a sister company of network
infrastructure company Independent Site Management www.ismireland.com. www.eWorkingIreland.com Movidia
secures €10.5m funding
Dublin start-up Movidia, which develops computer chips
for mobile phones, has secured more than $14m (€10.5m) in funding from a
consortium of Irish and international investors. The investment was led by
Canadian venture capital firm Celtic House Venture Partners and Capital-E, a
Belgian fund specialising in investments in the semiconductor sector. French
fund Emertec Gestion, AIB Seed Capital Fund and Enterprise Ireland were also
involved in the investment.
Movidia employs 50 staff – 12 in Dublin, eight at its
office in Hong Kong, and the remaining 30 at a software development centre in
Romania. http://www.movidia.com http://www.celtic-house.com Schlumberger
downsizing Cork operation
The Schlumberger Information Solutions operation in
Cork is to close its help desk in December with the loss of 37 jobs out of a
total staff of 49. Reports suggest the Cork subsidiary of the French firm lost
support and training contracts with a number of companies in recent years and
has been primarily engaged in providing technical support to its operations in
Europe, the Middle East and Asia over the past two years.
When the Little Island facility was established in
2002, it was reported that Schlumberger was investing more than €7.5m and would
create 200 jobs. http://www.slb.com/content/services/index_sis.asp

Anglo to sell off
€3bn of loans
Anglo Irish Bank is preparing to sell off €3bn worth of
loans on the international markets in a bid to raise fresh funds. The bank is
seeking to sell on the loans – issued to property developers, shopping centre
owners and retailers – to international buyers in its first securitisation
transaction since the Irish government announced its €480m bank guarantee
scheme earlier this month.
Anglo is preparing to sell on 71 commercial mortgages
issued by the bank on 114 properties in Ireland and Britain.
It is understood that the bank is anxious to obtain
fresh liquidity in a bid to neutralise concerns over its credit profile. Rating
agency Moody's said on Friday it may downgrade the bank's long-term deposit
rating.
Anglo’s share price has fallen over 80% so far this
year and in what was another bad day on the Dublin exchange the bank's stock
today fell a further 6% to go below the €2 mark at €1.945. http://www.angloirishbank.ie
Bank of
Scotland (Ireland) to discontinue tracker loans
Bank of Scotland (Ireland) has become the last Irish
lender to withdraw its range of tracker mortgages. The bank is to discontinue
offering new tracker mortgages from November 4. Having first introduced the
tracker mortgage to Ireland back in 2001, Bank of Scotland (Ireland) is
currently the only lender still offering this type of mortgage.
Bernard Kingston, Head of Homeloans at Bank of Scotland
(Ireland), said: “We are reluctantly withdrawing our tracker products. They are
a great product for customers as they provide real value for money and complete
transparency in terms of rate. Unfortunately, the turmoil in the financial
markets makes them no Back to top TOURISM &

Ryanair opens two
new Italian bases
Ryanair has opened two new bases in Italy, basing three
new aircraft at a cost of $210m (€160.7m) in Alghero and Cagliari. The new
bases – Ryanair’s sixth and seventh Italian bases – will create eight new
domestic and 11 new international routes to/from the island of Sardinia.
Ryanair also announced that it will increase frequency
to five daily return flights on the Rome-Milan route from November 24 and from
December 4 it will add a new route with a twice-daily Rome to Trapani service. Aer
Lingus website nosedives on fares deal
The Aer Lingus online booking website faltered as it
was inundated with customers looking to avail of a "free" flights
deal which the airline advertised on Tuesday.
The website stopped functioning at 11:00am, was back on
track shortly after 1:00pm but collapsed a second time during the day. The
problems arose after the airline sent an email to its mailing list offering
free flights to destinations in continental Europe – the first time the airline
has made such an offer. However, customers have to pick up the tab for taxes
and charges. Aer
Arann plans to cut workforce by 25%
Aer Arann has said it is seeking to cut its workforce
by 25% as part of a cost reduction programme which will result in 100
redundancies.
The airline, which operates between domestic airports
in Ireland and flies between Ireland and Britain as well as some European
destinations, says it intends to shift its focus more onto charter flights and
leasing its aircraft and crews to other airlines. The airline currently
operates 12 aircraft providing 600 flights per week and has one plane on lease.
A spokesman said key routes remain unaffected but the company is to change its
business model to ensure its long-term viability. Passenger numbers have grown
from 12,000 in its first year to 1.1m in 2006. www.aerarann.com
MEDIA
RTÉ seeks to cut
staff costs by €10m
As a result of a fall-off in advertising revenue, the
State’s national broadcaster RTÉ has announced a cost-reduction scheme which
will involve cuts in programming and measures to reduce staff costs by €10m in
2009. Director General Cathal Goan said RTÉ is reviewing its activity in a bid
to break even in 2009 and proposed staff reductions are expected to account for
40% of the overall savings. A year-long pay freeze before implementation of the
national wage agreement in September 2009 has been proposed; this means no
increments, merit increases, ex-gratia payments or bonuses to be paid to staff
at any level. However RTÉ will be making a special pensionable payment of €400
to all full time staff earning less than €50,000 a year.
In addition, the station is also reviewing its
purchasing practices and said some “curtailment of programming” is planned. The
station will be pursuing efficiency and value for money across the board.
Mr Goan who, along with his five most senior
executives, has volunteered to take a pay cut of 17.5%, also warned that if the
current difficult conditions worsen, then further cuts may have to be
undertaken.
TV3 is facing similar problems and is laying off 15
staff. THE ECONOMY
Government makes
changes to 1% income levy proposal
Last week's Budget created a crisis for the Government
with one Fianna Fáil TD, Joe Behan, resigning from the party and others
expressing grave concern about the plan to means-test the medical card for the
over-70s. Taoiseach Brian Cowen postponed a trip to China to help draught new
proposals which were revealed during a press conference yesterday morning. The Taoiseach was joined by Minister for
Health Mary Harney and Green Party leader John Gormley as he announced a
revised scheme which includes a simple means test but which will result in 95%
of the over-70s retaining a full medical card. Only a single person with an
income in excess of €36,500 per annum or a couple on €73k will be excluded.
To achieve the €100m savings which the original
proposal sought to deliver there will be an adjustment in the fees paid to
doctors. An independent consultant will spend the next week considering
submissions before recommending a new single capitation rate to be paid to GPs
in respect of each person on their books over the age of 70. At present a
doctor receives €161 per year in respect of each person over 70 who qualified
for the old means-tested medical card and €640 per year for those who only
qualify on age grounds. Savings are also to be made in the national drugs bill.
The Government then moved to make radical changes to
the 1% income levy which would have applied to all earnings under €100,000. The
proposal had been strongly criticised by trade unions, who wanted the low paid
excluded from the measure. Those earning the national minimum wage, or less,
will now be excluded from the levy. With those earning up to €17,500 excluded,
about one-third of the workforce, further adjustments will be made to the
scheme in the Finance Bill to recover the €50m which this change will cost.
This could be achieved by lowering the 2% threshold from €100k or having a 3%
levy for very high earners.
The Taoiseach has also told the Dáil that he will be
announcing a public service reform package in the coming weeks. GENERAL NEWS
Bio-science energy
company Kedco floats on London’s AIM
Cork-based energy group Kedco started trading on
London's AIM market on Monday in a move valuing the firm at €34.9m. The company
has listed almost 199.5 million shares at the admission price of 17.5 cent per
share.
Kedco supplies technology that generates electrical
power from sustainable fuel sources in Ireland and Britain. It forms joint
ventures with medium-sized waste management operators, local authorities and
food companies, whose waste it takes and converts to energy. The firm is
currently embarked on 25 projects, 16 in Britain and nine in Ireland.
Commenting on the listing, Kedco chief executive Dónal
Buckley said: “We believe our presence on AIM will raise our profile among new
and existing customers, enhancing their understanding of our proposition and
its revenue generating opportunities”. He also said the company will follow the
floatation with a further share issue in the new year. http://www.kedco.com SFI
welcomes €179m funding in Budget 2009
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) welcomed the
Government’s commitment to scientific and engineering research following the
provision of €179m in Budget 2009 to SFI for next year. SFI invests in research
areas of strategic value to Ireland’s long-term competitiveness and
development.
The Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation
(SSTI) 2006-2013 is a cornerstone of the National Development Plan, and has an
overall objective that “by 2013, Ireland will be internationally renowned for
the excellence of its research, be at the forefront in generating and using new
knowledge for economic and social progress, within an innovation-driven
culture”.
With most countries in Europe, Asia and South America
now investing heavily in scientific and engineering research, Ireland must
build on progress to date in enhancing its own research base, according to SFI.
http://www.sfi.ie Renewable
energy chief espouses green tech as way forward
Dr Eddie O’Connor, chief executive of Mainstream
Renewable Power, believes that with the right vision Ireland has the
opportunity to become a leader in green tech, by developing new technologies in
harnessing the wind, the sun, the ocean, and heat from the earth itself.
Addressing the annual dinner of the Irish Venture
Capital Association in Dublin recently, Dr O’Connor said that the opportunity
for Ireland was huge. “If Ireland was to install 6000mw of wind energy on land
and sea, some €15 to €20bn would be spent. This would go a long way to making
us energy independent. It would create some 18,000 new jobs. We would forego
the emission of 10.8 million tonnes of CO2, thereby avoiding fines of €324m per
annum. We would forego importing six million tonnes of coal equivalent every
year at a cost of €671m.”
He said that if Ireland does not grasp the opportunity
to become a world leader in a few chosen technologies then “we will be left
behind and reduced to being followers in them all. We have already wasted too
much time before getting started and if we don’t galvanise our efforts over the
next year it will be too late for us to catch up”. Full speech at http://www.ivca.ie/documents/SpeechtotheVentureCapitalistsAssociation81008.doc

OpenHydro has agreed to build and install

Taggart
Holdings has administrator appointed
An administrator has been appointed to the operations
of Derry-based builder Taggart Holdings in Ireland and Britain. The future for
housing developments in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, and Navan, Co. Meath is now looking
uncertain despite the firm’s assertions that it will complete the projects.
The Revenue Commissioners had issued a winding-up
petition against the firm in April after it failed to provide a forwarding
address when it closed its Dublin office early in 2007. Today it is reported
that Ulster Bank and Bank of Ireland also called in administrators as the
company was unable to service its debt.
Taggart Holdings, which was set up in 1989 by Michael
Taggart and his brother, John, employed more than 150 people in April 2007 and
now has just 15 staff.
Taggart began expanding into the Republic in the
mid-1990s. Two years ago, it acquired
Cecil M Yuill, a northeast England housebuilder, for £65m and later that year
went on to spend more than £100m on development land in the Belfast area,
neither of which now seems to have been a good investment. More
