Recession driving down new car sales by 49% |

December 2008 saw a 48.8% decrease, to 667, in private cars licensed, compared with 1,304 in December 2007, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office . The full-year figures show that 146,470 new cars were licensed, a drop of 19% on 2007.
However, there were 60,091 second-hand private cars licensed in 2008, an increase of 2.3% on the previous year. The number of new goods vehicles licensed in December 2008 was 426 compared with 811 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 47.5%.
