Superquinn announced today that it will close its Dundalk store by the end of next month as a result of cross-border competition. The Dundalk store is just 15 minutes drive from supermarkets in Newry where weak sterling and lower taxes ensure lower prices than can be offered in the Republic.
The supermarket group is seeking a total of 400 redundancies, 67 in Dundalk, as it tries to cut costs in response to reduced sales and tighter margins. The redundancies will be spread across the group's other 23 stores.
