The Government has announced a €223m National Broadband Scheme to deliver broadband coverage throughout the Republic by September 2010. A contract has been agreed with 3 Ireland to deliver the scheme to the remaining 10% of the population currently without cover.
While Ireland has over 1.2 million subscribers to broadband, approximately a third of the country, where 10% of the population reside, is without coverage.
The investment of €223m will be generated from a combination of Exchequer funds, EU co-financing and '3' and is expected to create 170 direct jobs.
