The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that the volume of retail sales plunged by 8.1% in November compared to the same month last year – the worst decline since February 1984. When motor trades are excluded from the Retail Sales Index, the annual change in the volume figures, 7.8%, is the largest decrease since April 1975.

The volume figures for the three months from August to October 2008 show that, compared with the three months ending July 2008, the largest increase in the volume of sales was in the Other Retail Sales (up 1.2%).

The largest decrease in the volume of sales was in the hardware, paints and glass sector, which was down 10.9%.
