Even those with the vaguest knowledge of sport will hardly argue with the claim that Tipperary's victory over Kilkenny in the All-Ireland hurling final was the story of the week. The seemingly invincible Kilkenny were hoping to become the first county to win the Liam McCarthy cup in five successive years, and were strong favourites to succeed, but Tipperary had different ideas and demonstrated these in what turned out to be a classic final. The score was Tipperary 4-17 Kilkenny 1-18.

The untimely death of actor Mick Lally was also a major news story. A firm favourite in homes throughout Ireland, as a result of 18 years in the TV soap Glenroe, his passing was widely mourned, particularly so as he was aged just 64.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair made news with the publication of his autobiography. The sections covering the Northern peace process and his views on Irish politicians were of particular interest. He continued to make news by appearing on Friday's Late Late Show and turning up for a book signing in Dublin on Friday. Protesters made their presence felt at both locations.
