Two gardaí from Cork travelled to France during the week to give evidence at an inquiry into the death of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who was beaten to death a short distance from her holiday home near Schull, Co. Cork in December 1996. Superintendent Liam Horgan from Bantry and Detective Garda Jim Fitzgerald of Bandon spent two days giving evidence at the inquiry, which has been set up by the French authorities.
The two gardaí were closely involved in the investigation into Ms Toscan du Plantier's murder but no one was ever charged in relation to her death.
