It is one hundred and sixty years since Joseph Cartan founded the Dundalk Democrat, to support Daniel O'Connell, and at that time it was based in Clanbrassil Street. The paper was then based in Earl Street for more than one hundred years, before moving to its present premises in the former Tempest building on Crowe Street. From 1872 the paper was in the ownership of the Roe family, until in 2000 Tom Roe sold it to the Leinster Leader group which in turn was acquired by the Johnston Press group four years ago. In the entire period there have been just nine editors, with the present one being Anthony Murphy.
