Kathleen Murray, a native of Summerhill, Athlone, has just acquired a seventh silver medal from President Mary McAleese, having celebrated her one hundred and seventh birthday at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon where she has lived for the past ten years. Mary, who never married and attributes her longevity partly to this fact, spent some time working in McNeill's undertakers and Nayler's chemist shop in Athlone before taking up a post as a priest's housekeeper. This role she continued to fulfil in a number of different presbyteries before retiring some forty years ago. Before moving to the Roscommon hospital she also smoked up to twenty cigarettes a day.
