Monday, 09 November 2009

Three men have been remanded in custody until next February after pleading guilty at Clonmel Circuit Court to a serious of violent assaults in Tipperary Town on St Patrick's Day this year. Ned (22) and Dan Delaney (18), and Patrick O'Keeffe (19), all of Tipperary town, carried out at least four unprovoked attacks including one on visiting American James Faul, who travelled from Missouri to give evidence.

Mr Faul, James Griffin, Frank Spillane and Franci Butler were all attacked in the course of the day, some being hit by road signs and others knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly. A fourth man, 18-year-old Paul Delaney, has already had his case in relation to assaults adjourned to next February.

The attacks received widespread publicity at the time, with witnesses claiming on Joe Duffy's Liveline programme that gardaí were afraid to take action. There is a widespread belief that it was the publicity given to the incidents by Joe Duffy that led to the arrests and charges.
