Mr Faul, James Griffin, Frank Spillane and Franci Butler were all attacked in the course of the day, some being hit by road signs and others knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly. A fourth man, 18-year-old Paul Delaney, has already had his case in relation to assaults adjourned to next February.
The attacks received widespread publicity at the time, with witnesses claiming on Joe Duffy's Liveline programme that gardaí were afraid to take action. There is a widespread belief that it was the publicity given to the incidents by Joe Duffy that led to the arrests and charges. |
