Killorglin resident Monika Dukarska came to this country from Poland three years ago and at that time had never done any rowing, and now she has taken a gold at the World Coastal Rowing Championships in Devon. Nineteen-year-old Monica, who is a student at IT Tralee, is a member of Killorglin Rowing Club where she is trained by Mike Fleming and at present she is taking part in international contests for Poland. Until she has been living in Ireland for five years she is not eligible for citizenship and, as she explains, she needs to keep competing at the highest level to give her a chance of qualifying for the London Olympics in 2012.
