A reception at the Imperial Hotel in Cork was held during the week to honour the first six women members of the Gardaí in the city. The event coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the entry of women into the force, though it was two yeas later that Helen Hayden, Mary Molloy, Breda Lee, Margaret Lohan, Mary McKenna and Mary O'Riordan presented themselves at the Bridewell Garda Station. At the event, which was attended by Lord Mayor Dara Murphy, chief superintendent Michael Finn and Biship John Buckley, a cake was cut by Inspector Mary King, the most senior female officer in Cork, and Elaine Howard, the newest recruit.
