Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has instructed aviation regulator Cathal Guiomard to ensure that the fees charged to passengers at Dublin Airport will be sufficient to cover the cost of the new terminal, T2. At present the fee is €7.39 and the regulator had proposed raising it next year to €8.35, with further increases dependent on the final cost of the new terminal. The Minister's directive, under Section 10 of the Aviation Regulation Act 2001, could mean that the increase will have to be greater, at a time when passenger numbers are falling.
Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary has already indicated that his airline will not be using the new terminal and he will take legal action if Ryanair passengers are forced to pay for T2.
