David Bloomer, who is in his 60s and originally from Malahide in north Dublin, was one of the five yachtsmen detained for a week by the Iranian authorities when their racing yacht mistakenly enters Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf. The crew were sailing from Bahrain to Dubai and had changed course slightly to give a wide berth to oil rigs.
Mr Bloomer, who used to work as a sales manager for IBM is now a radio sports journalist in Bahrain, where he has lived since the 1980s. It was in this capacity that he was on board the yacht ‘Kingdom of Bahrain’ which was supposed to take part in the Dubai to Muscat race.
