At the Philanthropist of the Year awards in Dublin on Wednesday, international property developer Cathal McCarthy was given the local award for his efforts to promote the general use of cervical cancer vaccinations. He is providing funding to ensure that 500 young girls in his native Co. Monaghan are vaccinated next year.
The national award went to Chantal McCabe, the French-born wife of entrepreneur Bill McCabe, for establishing and funding three national organisations, the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Young Social Innovators and Social Innovations Ireland.
Farmer John Clarke received the international award for establishing with his wife, broadcaster Marian Finucane, a hospice and orphanage in Cape Town. This was their response to witnessing the devastation being caused by HIV on a visit to South Africa.
