Cíarán Mac Mathúna, noted broadcaster and folklorist, has died at the age of 84. From Co. Limerick, he spent 15 years recording music for his RTE Radio programme “A Job of Journeywork”, and a second programme, “Mo Chéol Thú”, ran from 1970 until he retired four years ago. Mr Mac Mathúna leaves a widow, the singer Dolly MacMahon, three children and three grandchildren.
Ciarán visited Greenwich Village some 40 years ago and recorded the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem performing before their fame spread. He remained a close friend of Liam Clancy for the remainder of their days.
