A pilot scheme under which the Director of Public Prosecutions is prepared, where possible, to reveal the reasons for a decision not to prosecute, will now be extended; the pilot was due to end in January. In 2008 34% of the more than 11,000 criminal cases received by the DPP’s office did not proceed to prosecution and, although the pilot scheme was initiated last year, it is only now that requests for explanations are reaching director James Hamilton’s office.
