What is going on at CIE? | Print |  Email

Former CIE executive Monica Murphy was awarded compensation of €189k by the Equality Tribunal who agreed with her claim that she had suffered gender discrimination. Ms Murphy said that she had been given a meaningless job and assigned a damp basement office after she returned from a career break. She also argued that she had been passed over for promotion on three occasions and that her supervisor had encouraged her to accept redundancy, refused to sanction expenses that staff of her grade normally received, and did not invite her to team meetings. A colleague told her that the role she was given was normally assigned to staff before they retired.

Meanwhile back at CIE the case has had repercussions. John Keenan, Director of Human Resources at Iarnród Éireann, has initiated High Court action in an effort to remain in the position he has held for the past 15 years. He was told on December 2 by his CEO Richard Fearn to collect his personal belongings from his office and leave the premises.

Mr Fearn thought it inexcusable that Mr Keenan should have learned the outcome of the Equality Tribunal hearing on November 20 and should have failed to inform him immediately.
