€10m in special funding for flood victims may be adequate | Print |  Email
Sunday, 07 February 2010

The Government came in for fierce criticism back in November when it made an initial €10m available in special emergency funds for those in trouble as a result of the unprecedented flooding experienced in many parts of the country. Opposition politicians insisted that the figure was miserly and would fail to provide for many of those affected.

To date 1,135 victims have received financial help at a total cost of €790,335. The highest award was in excess of €20k. Larger claims, it is believed, have yet to be submitted as some properties remain under water and the repair costs are still being assessed.

The Department of the Environment also made €16.4m available to 19 local authorities that were affected by flooding.
