July 30: Aer Lingus threatened with another strike | Print |  Email
Friday, 30 July 2010

Just months after we thought peace had broken out in Aer Lingus, cabin crew are threatening more industrial action over what appears to be differing interpretations of the agreement which was to save the airline €97m in a year. The airline claims that it is simply implementing the agreement on flying hours which union members voted to accept. The union, on the other hand, argues that its members are being asked to work hours for which they are not being paid.

Cabin crew members of the Impact union have begun voting on whether they should refuse to work any additional hours. While the media suggests industrial action could commence   in mid-August, an Aer Lingus spokesperson has moved to assure passengers that flights will not be disrupted.

Another body found in search for the Disappeared

The search for the Disappeared has been continuing at a number of locations and yesterday human remains were found buried in a bog in Co. Monaghan, across the border from Cullaville. The remains are believed to be those of Charlie Armstrong (55), from Crossmaglen, who disappeared while on his way to Mass in August 1981. The IRA has never admitted killing Mr Armstrong and there is no explanationas to why he was executed. Presumably someone involved in his death or burial has been advising the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains on where to search for the body.

Central bank outlook is more positive

In its quarterly bulletin the Central Bank forecasts that gross domestic product will grow by 0.8% this year, while gross national product will fall by a further 1%. Three months ago the respective forecasts were -0.5% and -1.5%.

For 2011 the bank is forecasting that GDP will grow by 2.8% and GNP will increase by 2.2%.

Human remains found in Co. Wicklow

Workmen involved in a tree-clearing operation on private property in Co. Wicklow yesterday discovered a skull which is said to be that of an adult male. Gardaí have now sealed off the area near Manor Kilbride, about 11km from Blessington, and a post-mortem is being carried out.

Soccer fans enjoy the occasion despite the result

There was great excitement among soccer fans as Italian giants Juventus yesterday came to Tallaght Stadium to play Shamrock Rovers in the 6,000 seat venue. The game started badly for the home side, going a goal down within three minutes, but they went on to put in a creditable performance, conceding just one other goal in the 75th minute.

Rovers now travel to Italy for the second leg of the Europa League qualifying tie next week but no one expects them to progress.

Today's Papers

The Irish Times is the only paper to lead with the threatened airline strike, with the headline "Aer Lingus strike vote could cause travel disruption". The Irish Examiner strikes a positive note with "Consumer confidence in economy hits 3-year high" while the Irish Independent has a somewhat negative take on the construction industry; the headline reads "11,000 new houses built as 300,000 still lie empty".

The Irish News has an uncharacteristically lengthy headline this morning, "Charlie Armstrong disappeared on his way to Mass - 29 years later he will get a Christian burial".

The Weather in Galway

It is a wet and windy morning though it might brighten later in the day. Temperature 18C.
