Poet and short story writer John Montague was made a Chevalier de la Legion on Wednesday, one of the highest honours bestowed by France. The title honours those who have contributed to French life, and it is Mr Montague’s extensive translations of French poetry that have been recognised.
Next week he will receive a second honour when he is conferred with an honorary doctorate at the Sorbonne.
