Irish back packers help save life of Australian fishermen | Print |  Email
Monday, 05 December 2011

Two of our neighbours were in the news during the week when they were involved in the rescue of a badly injured fisherman north of Perth in Western Australia. Leah Roxby and Tara Shine from Menlo, Veronica Dick, their school friend from Galway and Veronika Klein, a German backpacker, were drinking coffee outside a café in the town of Denham when they heard an explosion.

The blast occurred on a fishing boat moored just offshore and it had caught fire. As some building workers waded into the water to investigate, Leah told them that she was a nurse if they needed help. When they found the fisherman they called on her and she joined them in the water and helped them bring the injured man ashore.

It was then that the four backpackers took over, tending the man, who had extensive burns, until an ambulance arrived. According to Leah the injured man is making a good recovery.
