US district court judge William G Young has ordered Boston College to allow him to view the papers relating to an oral history project involving former IRA members. The project was directed by Ed Moloney and the college had sought to have quashed the subpoena seeking the information. The request was rejected by Judge Young though he conceded that the release of the information posed risks for academic freedom.
Those taking part in the project had been assured by Boston College that the interviews would not be made public during their lifetimes. The ‘British authorities’ have, however, demanded access to the documents to assist in the investigation of the murder of Jean McConville in 1972. The suspicion is that there are elements in the North who believe that references to Mrs McConville’s death will damage Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams.
