Dublin baby recovers from surgery in Boston | Print |  Email
Monday, 23 January 2012

Elie Madden, aged one, has been brought out of an induced 38-day coma at Children’s Hospital in Boston where she underwent surgery to stimulate the growth of her oesophagus. Elie, who has a twin sister Emie, was born with a five centimetre gap between her oesophagus and her stomach, leading to her being unable to eat or drink without medical intervention. She will have three further operations for other complications.

The twins, their mother Esti Madden and their grandmother Anita were flown to Boston by the Air Corps last year. The cost of Elie’s medical care is being underwritten by the VHI and the Health Service Executive.
