Included in the list, published in Britain during the week, of those who refused honours from Queen Elizabeth is playwright Seán O’Casey, who was offered a CBE in 1963. Also turning down the same offer three years earlier was artist Francis Bacon.

Normally details of refusals are never divulged but that changed under Freedom of Information legislation. The list that was released did not include anyone who is still alive.
