Book by UL academic challenges thinking on male obesity
Wednesday, 03 December 2008

"Men and the War on Obesity", by University of Limerick Senior Lecturer Dr Lee Monaghan, argues that the science behind the present thinking on male obesity is uncertain and founded on questionable assumptions. Dr Monaghan based his findings on observations and interviews with men in a mixed-sex slimming club whom medicine might label overweight or obese. At the launch of the book he pointed out that, using the criteria of the Body Mass Index, most Irish men would be found to be too heavy, as would Brad Pitt, George Clooney and the entire Munster rugby team.
